  • Cal South advises State Cup & National Cup participants to brace for Coronageddon

Players, coaches and families participating in Cal South’s State Cup and National Cup action at the SilverLakes Sports Complex the weekend of February 19 are advised to steer clear of the east and westbound 91 Freeways in the Corona area, per the Riverside County Transportation Commission.

Starting Friday, Feb. 19 at 9 p.m. until Monday, Feb. 22 at 4 a.m., the county will have a 55-hour full closure of the 91 Freeway, extending for six-miles between the 71 and I-15 Freeways, causing State Cup and National Cup participants to take a detour on their way to Norco.

SilverLakes Soccer Complex advises that you take the following route when trying to reach the complex, if you must take the 91 eastbound:

    • All 91 eastbound traffic should take the 71 north and exit S Euclid Ave and take a right northbound
    • Turn right onto Pine Ave, and continue onto Schleisman Rd.
    • Schleisman Rd ends in a T intersection at Hamner Ave, take a right onto Hamner Ave.
    • Fields 1 – 24 will be on your left at the next intersection and Fields 25 – 32 will be on the right at the intersection.

In case of rainstorms or inclement weather, the closure will be postponed to the following weekend; the tournament may also be affected should the bad weather prevail. For all the latest news and updates on this matter, follow Cal South on Facebook and Twitter.

  • Cal South celebrates recreational soccer in the All-Star Tournament of Champions

Cal South celebrated its recreational players in the second annual Recreational All-Star Tournament of Champions event this past weekend at Frances Ryan Park in Escondido, Calif.
Fourty-eight teams from all seven Cal South districts from U-10, U-12, and U-14 age divisions gathered for action on sunny Saturday morning, kicking off the round robin games that would eventually decide the fate of each team.

Even though the weather cooperated on Saturday, the second day of action was a complete turnaround as teams were only able to finish off the primary round of games due to heavy rain, playing a total of three games played over the weekend, eliminating the final championship match.

Despite the rain, players, coaches and their families smiled, chanted, and applauded as each team was presented with their trophies and medals. Oceanside Breakers once again was among the finalists in the tournament, having finished as runners up in last year’s competition. Below is a full list of those awarded:

Aside from the awards mentioned above, the Cal South All-Star Tournament of Champions MVP pin returned for its second year. After each match, head coaches would award a player from the opposing team with the pin, rewarding them for their sportsmanship, skills, or fair play.

Teams participating in this year’s tournament advanced after winning in their respective district’s Commissioner’s Cup. The winning teams from each age group in the Commissioner’s Cup automatically qualified to the Tournament of Champions, adding in one wild card per age division.

  • Cal South's Recreational All-Star Tournament of Champions set to bring out the best of SoCal

FULLERTON, CA - It's Tournament of Champions time once again! The best of the best in recreational soccer will come together as the 2016 Cal South Recreational All-Star Tournament of Champions is played this weekend at Frances Ryan Park in Escondido, Calif.

Just for this weekend, All-Star teams from all Cal South Districts from U-10, U-12, and U-14 age levels will look to excel in the four-team groups in order to earn a berth in the final championship match. The group phase will have teams play three games, with the group winners advancing to the final championship game, while runner ups will play a consolation match. All recreational players are eligible to participate, but teams must be made up of players from one league.

“The mission and goal to have this recreational All-Star tournament is to have fun and to stimulate the young groups of players to develop great experiences and to continue playing soccer,” said Rick Velasco, District 7 Commissioner and Cal South Vice President of Youth.

In order to earn a ticket to this weekend’s action, each team took part in their respective district’s Commissioner’s Cup, earning their berth as early as December of 2015 to as late as last weekend. The winning teams from each age group in the Commissioner’s Cup automatically qualified to the Tournament of Champions, adding in one wild card per age division.

This will be Cal South’s second Recreational All-Star Tournament of Champions in its history, inaugurating the event just last year. Simi Valley YSL, Vista Rec, and Oceanside Breakers were winning teams in the Boys Division, while PDYSL All-Stars, Oceanside Breakers and DMCV Sharks All-Stars were champions in the Girls Division.
